    FROM SOMEWHERE
What began as a necessity turned into a much-loved delicacy. For centuries the people of Africa have been preserving meat on the wide-open savannahs of southern Africa. By salting strips of meat and letting them dry out in the hot African sun, the meat could keep for months at a time without spoiling. When European explorers arrived, they began adding spices for extra flavour. Which is how, many centuries later, biltong as we know it today, came to make one more journey – to Australia.

In southern Africa, biltong is about culture. And culture is at the heart and soul of our story. If you were born on the vast plains of the continent, it is most likely that you cut your teeth on a stick of Biltong. To most southern Africans, no matter your background, biltong needs no explanation. Most of us cannot imagine our childhoods without biltong and by the same token, can’t imagine going through the rest of our lives without it either. It is a product that is deeply rooted in the way of life, and we knew we wanted to share it.

Established in 1994, we opened our first store in Wembley, Perth, Western Australia (WA). It was the beginning of a passionate, fiery journey that changed the way people saw (and eat) Biltong in Australia today. In the beginning, it was mostly about offering the “scatterlings of Africa” a nostalgic taste of ‘home’ and chance to reconnect with memories. But over the years, we’ve worked hard to tell the story of Biltong – its origins, its salty richness and natural meaty flavours, its nutritional benefits and its eating occasions – far and wide. The magic of the journey has been in uniting two distinct regions and traditions.

We all come from somewhere, and biltong, like all food, is more than sustenance; there are stories waiting to be shared.
