WHAT CUSTOMERS ARE SAYING
FOR BILTONG LOVERS
The smart choice
Some food simply earns its place in the bag.
Biltong needs no fuss and very little space. Take it on the bike, pack it for a day on the water, slip it into a hiking pack or keep some close when the road ahead is long.
Rich in complete protein, naturally low in carbohydrate and satisfyingly savoury, it gives you something substantial when hunger catches up with you.
There are no wrappers promising adventure. Just good biltong, ready when you are.
Because whether you are chasing kilometres, waves, fish, trails or simply a day that refuses to sit still, the best snack is often the one you remembered to bring along with you.
Not all dried meat is the same
They may begin with the same thing: good beef.
After that, biltong and jerky go their separate ways.
Jerky is cut into strips, marinated and dried or cooked until its familiar chew develops. Flavour is worked into every piece before it is packed and ready to travel.
Biltong asks for something different.
Larger cuts of seasoned beef are hung and left to the quiet work of air and time. Moisture slowly leaves. Flavour deepens. Texture changes. And only when the meat is ready does the knife come out.
Perhaps that is where the real difference is found.
In the slice.
Moist or dry. Thick or whisper-thin. Lean, or with that prized ribbon of fat.
Two ways of preserving beef.
Two entirely different pleasures
The Benefits of Biltong
Biltong packs plenty of nutrition into a small handful. Rich in complete protein, it provides all nine essential amino acids, alongside iron, zinc and vitamin B12, plus naturally occurring creatine, the compound widely used in sports nutrition to support muscle performance.
Protein provides the building blocks for maintaining and repairing muscle, while iron supports oxygen transport, B12 contributes to normal energy metabolism and zinc supports normal immune function. Biltong is typically low in carbohydrate and sugar, too.
And its ingredient list can be refreshingly short: quality beef, vinegar, salt and spices. When hunger strikes, that makes biltong a nutrient-dense alternative to another sweet, protein bar or packet of crisps.
How to Enjoy Biltong
Biltong rarely needs anything more than a knife and an appetite, but it is a surprisingly versatile ingredient.
Give it a place on a charcuterie board with good cheese, fresh fruit, pickles, preserves and crusty bread. Shave it over eggs or salads, fold it through a frittata, tuck it into a warm croissant or scatter it over a baked potato. Finely chopped or powdered, its deep savoury flavour works beautifully through scones, muffins, pasta and creamy sauces. It can even bring an unexpected salty note to something sweeter, paired with pear, dates or honey.
And, of course, there is biltong soup: rich, creamy and deserving of a cold day.
FROM SOMEWHERE
What began as a necessity turned into a much-loved delicacy. For centuries the people of Africa have been preserving meat on the wide-open savannahs of southern Africa. By salting strips of meat and letting them dry out in the hot African sun, the meat could keep for months at a time without spoiling. When European explorers arrived, they began adding spices for extra flavour. Which is how, many centuries later, biltong as we know it today, came to make one more journey – to Australia.
Established in 1994, we opened our first store in Wembley, Perth, Western Australia (WA). It was the beginning of a passionate, fiery journey that changed the way people saw (and eat) Biltong in Australia today. In the beginning, it was mostly about offering the “scatterlings of Africa” a nostalgic taste of ‘home’ and chance to reconnect with memories. But over the years, we’ve worked hard to tell the story of Biltong – its origins, its salty richness and natural meaty flavours, its nutritional benefits and its eating occasions – far and wide. The magic of the journey has been in uniting two distinct regions and traditions.
We all come from somewhere, and biltong, like all food, is more than sustenance; there are stories waiting to be shared.
